underweight_50According to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, women who are under weight before their pregnancy are 72% more likely to miscarry in their first three months. But the two-thirds of women who took vitamin supplements during early pregnancy reduced their risk by around 50%.

Those categorized as underweight have a body mass index under 18.5.

Approximately, one in five pregnancies in UK ends up in miscarriage. However, increased maternal age, a previous history of miscarriage, and infertility too are the factors, which relates to it.

Factors that might avert miscarriages would be daily intake of folic acid, iron, and multivitamins, along with fresh fruits, vegetables and chocolates.

Previous history of abortion or women who had in vetro fertilization (IVF) are more prone to miscarriages.

Women who suffered from nausea and sickness in the first 12 weeks were almost 70% less likely to miscarry and the more severe the sickness, the better the odds of the pregnancy continuing.

Noreen Maconochie, a senior lecturer in epidemiology and medical statistics said,

‘It is likely that advice to encourage a healthy diet and to try and reduce stress and promote emotional well-being might help women in early pregnancy, or those planning a pregnancy, reduce their risk of miscarriage’.

Nevertheless, the actual cause of majority of miscarriages is not completely understood.
