complications-during-pregnancy_50Mothers who experience some or the other complications during pregnancy and delivery give birth to children who might experience wheezing disorders.

According to Dr. Franca Rusconi,

‘this study adds weight to the epidemiological data which suggest that early development has significant consequences in disease risk not only in childhood (our study), but also throughout life’.

The study was based on the links between maternal medical complications and procedures during pregnancy and at delivery and the risks of various wheezing disorders in more than 15,000 children between 6 and 7 years old.

It concluded that

1. 9.5% had transient early wheezing.
2. 5.4% had persistent wheezing.
3. 6.1% had late-onset wheezing.
4. Maternal diabetes was associated with a 72% increased risk of persistent wheezing.

Intake of antibiotics during delivery or for urinary tract infections were also linked with early-onset transient and persistent wheezing.

However, amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, cesarean section, and weight gain during pregnancy were not linked with childhood wheezing although history of asthma and/or allergy could lead to the disorder.
