Recently a study has revealed that in developing countries, abortions are killing more than 60,000 women yearly. And another 5m of them are suffering from infections and complications.
Researchers from Alan Guttmacher Institute collected the relevant data and concluded that a major portion of maternal illness and deaths are the outcome of unsafe abortions.
According to the statistical data, round about 19 million unsafe abortions are taking place yearly. This includes both legal abortions and illegal ones where, the apparatus and medical procedures are likely to be defective.
In most of the countries, women opt for termination because they do not have any financial assistance to rear the child.
Dr Susheela Singh, chief researcher, is of the view that it could be only be meted out by educating the women folk about effective contraception so that they are able to avoid unintended pregnancies.
Of the 13 nations studied, Uganda had the highest annual hospitalization rate at 16.4 per 1,000 women, followed by Egypt with 15.3 and the lowest was Bangladesh with 2.8. The average rate of hospitalization in developing nations, excluding China, was 5.7 per 1,000 women per year.
