The most unnoticed threat which the babies are subjected today is sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have postulated that in America, 65 million people are suffering from the disease with 19 million being affected every year. Since, there are no visible symptoms for the disease consequent upon which, the would be mothers remain unconscious about it. Linda Alexander, a Ph.D., former president of the American Social Health Association (ASHA) is of the view that, ‘Pregnant women are more likely to know about the remote risk of contracting toxoplasmosis from changing the kitty litter than about the dangerous ways an STD can affect their baby’. If the disease is not looked after, it may lead to preterm labor, blindness, pneumonia, developmental disabilities, and even death. Usually the STD’s are perceived during pregnancy though not cured completely. Routine tests include hepatitis B, syphilis and HIV. Your doctor will not screen you for other tests unless she thinks that you’re at risk.
